Work Environment
The working environment for a pediatric surgeon is very pleasant. They work with babies, children, and young adults. They work with those kinds of young people so it should be fun because they're young and full of new stuff. They are most likely to work with other surgeons and nurses. Pediatric Surgeons perform sugery so they would need to use surgical utensils and an exam room.
Education or Training Needed
Pediatric Surgeons are required to complete a bachelor's degree program. Then, you would have to apply to medical school. Once you're accepted in to medical school you need to earn a medical degree. In medical school you spend two years in the classroom, learning new things and the other two years actually practicing on patients with the supervision of doctors. After you have earned your medical degree, you need to complete a full residency and fellowship. The people planning on becoming pediatric surgeons usually spend about five years under general surgical residency and another two years doing a fellowship on children's surgery. When you're done with your residency and fellowship you need become licensed. First, you would need to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Then, you need to become board certified. You must pass a qualifying exam with 300 multiple choice questions within an eight hour period. After, you would need to pass an oral exam which is taken over a thirty minute period. When that testing period is over, Pediatric Surgeons may choose to become ABS certified in pediatric surgery. That includes a test of 200 multiple choice questions over a five hour period, and then an oral exam which is thirty minutes.
Salary and Benefits
Pediatric Surgeons earn between $162,154 and $475,000 plus the annual bonuses they get. Some of the benefits they get are social security, disability insurance, healthcare, pension, and time off.
Work Duties
A Pediatric Surgeon is to correct any traumatic injury, disease, conjenital condition, and more things with surgery. Their main responsibility is to diagnose, prevent, operate, and mangement care.
Work Hours
Pediatric Surgeons have to be able to come in whenever they are called in. They get at least one day out of the seven to be free of responsibility and work.
Conclusion
After all my research on this career choice I realized that I don't really want to take this as my career. I would love to do this but I can't really handle the sight of blood or opening people up. I want to help kids get better, but If I can't handle those things the I can't be a Pediatric Surgeon.
